Challenger Intermediate 6th grade students in Mrs. Wilmoth, Mrs. White, Mrs. VanHorn, and Mr. Condray’s class welcomed Mayor Lily Wu on Friday, February 21st. The visit provided students with a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about local government and what it means to be a community leader, as well as discussing leadership, civic responsibility, and personal growth.
During Mayor Wu’s visit she shared her personal and professional journey, detailing her background and path that led her to public service. She explained the various duties of her office, giving students insight into the day-to-day operations of city government, and the importance of civic engagement.
The highlight of the Mayor’s presentation was her discussion of the “4 L’s” philosophy that guides her approach to leadership:
● Leader (It’s not a noun, it’s an action).
● Learning never stops.
● Listening is the best way to solve problems.
● Loving what you do, who helped you along the way, and where you came from.
The visit concluded with a Q&A session where students had the opportunity to ask Mayor Wu questions about her experiences and receive advice on how they can make positive contributions to their community. Thank you Mayor Lily Wu for taking the time to come to Challenger. Your knowledge was both informative and motivating to our school.
